CERTAIN
criteria* must be met in order to become a
professional driving instructor and teach driving
for money or 'money's worth'. These
are:
You
must have held (and still hold) a full UK
licence for at least four clear years.
You
must have no criminal convictions.
You
must be able to read a number plate at 27.5m / 90ft.
You
must pass the Register qualifying exam.
This comprises difficult and demanding
tests: theory; eyesight and driving
techniques; instructional ability.

You
must have your name entered on the
Register of Approved Driving Instructors.
When
you have satisfied all the above criteria and
paid the registration fee you will be sent a
Certificate of Registration - often referred to
as the 'green badge' - which must be displayed in
the lower left corner of the windscreen when
professional tuition is being given.
Registration
lasts for four years and is renewable on payment
of a fee. You must also still satisfy items 1 and
2 of the above criteria.
Whilst
on the Register ADIs are required to undergo
periodic 'Tests of Continued Fitness and Ability
to Instruct' - usually called check tests -
during which their teaching will be assessed and
marked. If certain standards are not reached this
could ultimately lead to removal from the
Register.
The
Driving Standards Agency (DSA)
administers the Register of Approved Driving
Instructors, the testing of PDIs (potential
driving instructors) and the re-testing of ADIs.
It is an executive agency of the Department of
Transport and operates on a Trading Fund Status
basis.
There
are currently approximately 29,300 ADIs on the
Register and last year approximately 2,000 ADIs
were added to it.
