Core Competencies Made Easy
A Book Explaining and Detailing the
Key Skills that an Effective Teacher Needs.
DSA RECOMMENDED Training Establishment Principal
Brian M Stratton has added a new title to his comprehensive range of reference books for instructors. Core Competencies
Made Easy provides guidance for instructors. It will help those attempting their ADI Part 3 tests and also
qualified teachers with a check test imminent or who just want to brush up on the core competencies.
This is the latest in a long line of books which started ten
years ago with the Driving Test:Essential Information and which, according to Brian, took the longest time to write.
"I spent almost two years on the book, from inception to completion," says Brian.
A great deal of time was spent getting the format correct and gathering the information necessary for each column of the tables.
Then it was written and re-written until the meaning was absolutely clear. It was then trialled with a selection of ADIs and
then revised again. I hope instructors find it useful and beneficial in structuring their teaching," adds Brian.
The book starts with sections which define each of the core
competencies in a clear and straightforward manner. The book is then laid out in a table format with three columns
headed 'What?' 'Why?' and 'How?'.
Faults are then listed in the 'What?' column. These mistakes are the most likely errors
that drivers will make and are taken from Brian's experience of teaching many learner drivers, assessing experienced motorists' faults,
observing SEs' faults on ADI Part 3 tests and discussing with other instructors the type of faults that are made.
Over six hundred reasons why faults occur are listed, together with constructive solutions. Remedies are given in a clear and
precise manner, allowing instructors to offer just the right amount of information without overloading pupils. Or, as one instructor
put it: " I can get the exact solution in the right words."
